If you’re planning on going to Ecuador, prepare yourself for a wild ride with ups and downs of every kind. This country will push you to your physical limits and raise the bar for emotional highs.
In our opinion Otavalo was the best possible place to start our time in Ecuador. The welcoming town with it’s colourful indigenous people, bustling markets and beautiful landscapes quickly showed us what to expect from Ecuadorians…. warmth and kindness. We then tackled the surreal Quilotoa Loop. Emerging from the dream that is the Quilotoa crater we found ourselves in Quito, a city with a seedy underbelly. While safety can be a concern, the history of Ecuador’s capital city should not be missed. A day trip to the equator can be pretty fun too…. when’s the last time you cartwheeled along the equatorial line?
Ready for a little more adrenaline we made our way to Baños, where we got cold feet due to the very noisy and earth-shakingly thunderous volcano violently erupting nearby. We left for the beach town of Puerto Lopez in hopes of scuba diving and unfortunately were pushed to Guayaquil in search of a hospital before finishing our time in Cuenca. Old Town Cuenca’s small town feel was a lovely place to end our adventure…. until next time.
