We claim to be beach bums but we sure find ourselves in the mountains just as much if not more. It’s easy for us to admit we aren’t big city people. While we’ve been to some awesome cities (example: Xi’an in China), we are forever drawn away to the more remote and natural landscapes.
So let’s break it down, is one really better than the other?
Oh the sand, the ocean…. the thought instantly sends me into a state of daydreaming (not that it takes much). Sand between your toes, salt in your hair and the sun enveloping you in its warmth. It’s just so relaxing. While you swing in a hammock or catch some rays in a beach chair, days at the beach are slow and easy. If you try, you can find a few downfalls to the beach life… first of all sand flies; while these tiny critters aren’t on every beach, they can certainly affect your experience. Sun burns can be painful if you don’t take care of your skin. Beaches also tend to be associated with hangovers…. I mean who doesn’t love a cold margarita or beer in paradise? But more often than not, beaches are just that… paradise. So far, our favourite beach is Otres (1 and 2) in Cambodia, where is yours?
Green rolling hills to snow-covered peaks. There is something forever fresh about the mountain air that draws us back again and again. For us, we also love hikes, walks and multi-day treks which seem to be oh-so rewarding in a mountainous region. The biggest downfall we find in the mountains is the cooler climate. We’re from Canada so you think we’d totally love the snowy mountains but not so much. Luckily there are plenty of mountains around the world that never see that fluffy white stuff (sorry skiiers and snowboarders, it’s just not our thing). Our favourite mountain trek was Tiger Leaping Gorge in China, what’s been your best mountain experience?
The conversation and comparison of beaches and mountains is a common one. All we know is that we love both so we’re going to keep the conversation going with a new series on Mountains vs. Beaches in countries we have been to. Let us know if you have any countries you want to read about first, stay tuned!
