If you’re embarking on a new adventure, the first bit can be exceptionally overwhelming. It’s new. It’s surprising. It’s frustrating. It’s bittersweet, happy, sad, beautiful, difficult, rewarding. Once you overcome the sense that everything is new and you find comfort in the unknown, you feel full of life. Here are the three mantras that we came back to day after day for the first few weeks of our trip.
First and foremost, LET GO OF EXPECTATIONS. Where you’re going isn’t like anywhere you’ve been before. Even if it’s a place you’re returning to, you have changed since your last visit and so has the destination. Each adventure is a blank canvas, nothing more. Let the experience paint the picture rather than your imagination (because dreams do come true if you let them).
Once you’ve left your expectations behind, KEEP AN OPEN MIND. The world outside your home bubble is different, but isn’t that why you’re leaving? You want to feel a little bit more alive? You want to experience something new? Cool. Keep your eyes and ears open and do all of that. Leave stereotypes and preconceived notions behind. The time for personal growth is now.
SAY YES. Find the edge of your comfort zone, challenge it and expand it. Every time you feel your throat tighten, your stomach turn, your eyes wince… if that voice in your head is saying “I’m scared” or “I’m nervous” or “I want to but I can’t”…Just go for it. Unless you feel like you have really found yourself in an unsafe situation, step forward rather than backward. Travelling is so connected to going, leaving and arriving. Go forward. Leave your fears behind. Arrive at the right decision, especially if it’s the hardest one to make. Don’t sell yourself short. Make this the adventure you want it to be.
The first leg of your journey may involve a lot of discomfort and frustration. But it’s all so worth it. Before you know it, you will begin to feel a shift in your soul. Colours become more vibrant. Your heart softens. You begin to shine from the inside out. That’s where the real fun starts.
